NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Haldex introduced its ModulT air disc brake line here for the United States.

Haldex made the announcement Feb. 28 at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s annual meeting.

The brake has been in production in Europe since 2011. Besides being available in many countries, it also has been in field tests in Canada for several years, said Jeff Stokes, Haldex’s global product manager of disc brakes.

“Five years ago, they didn’t exist, now they have grown to over 20% of the market in Europe,” Stokes said. “The wind of change is in the air … [in] one, five, 10 years, the air disc industry is coming” to North America.

The company said the design of the brakes can meet customer demands for performance while lowering weight.

The brakes are targeted for on-highway applications, Haldex said. The first product of the line is the 22.5-inch optimized trailer brake, weighing 70 pounds, including pads.

Looking ahead, Haldex said it will launch 19.5-inch and 22.5-inch air disc brake sizes for trucks.

“The ModulT air disc brake is the perfect solution for fleets looking for high efficiency with greater control and stability for a long service life with lower total cost of ownership,” Stokes said.

“I see no problem with 10 years of normal life,” Stokes said at the press conference. “Obviously, you have to maintain them.”
