Group Calls for Ban on Cell Phone Use While Driving

A national safety group is advocating for laws completely banning cell phone use while driving, the Associated Press reported.

In a new campaign, the National Safety Council is calling upon states to enact bans on use of both hand-held and hands-free cell phones, AP said.

The campaign also asks businesses to prohibit employees from using cell phones while driving on the job.

The group says that driving while talking on a cell phone is dangerous and leads to fatalities. The group's president likened cell phone use while driving to drunk driving, AP said.

Six states and the District of Columbia ban hand-held cell phone use while driving, but no state completely bans cell phone use while driving.

A study by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis estimates 6% of vehicle crashes can be attributed to cell phone use, AP said.
