FMCSA’s Sandberg Proposes Special Training for Drivers of Longer Combination Vehicles

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration last week proposed requiring operators of longer combination vehicles to have specialized federal training on how to drive with double and triple trailers.

“This proposal will enhance the safety of commercial vehicle operations and help ensure that drivers of large trucks have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate longer combination vehicles on our nation’s highways,” FMCSA Administrator Annette Sandberg said in a press release.

LCV safety has been a controversial topic in recent months in Washington.



afety advocates held a rally outside the Capitol in May urging Congress to limit LCV proliferation onto interstates in other states. And Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, had put a hold on Sandberg’s nomination to be FMCSA administrator until the committee recommended the Senate take a look at LCV safety.
