FMCSA Warns Drivers, Driving Schools of Recruiter Scam

Scammers posing as trucking company recruiters are defrauding truck drivers into giving them hundreds of dollars in exchange for jobs that do not exist, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration warned.

FMCSA said the scam involves a fraudster contacting a truck driving school posing as trucking company recruiter. The fraudster will say that he or she urgently needs recent driving school graduates.

When the fraudster finds a driver, he or she will offer a job with above-average pay, and agree to ignore any criminal record. He or she will then ask for a wire transfer of $350 or more to prove the driver’s financial solvency.

“Victims are directed to travel to a location, often in another state than his or her residence, to be picked up by a company trainer and the pick-up does not occur,” FMCSA said.

FMCSA urged drivers and driving school representatives to call the listed phone number of any carrier who contacts them with a job offer, “and verify the recruiter is a duly authorized representative of the carrier.”
