FMCSA Urged to Fix Outreach Programs

GAO Criticizes Oversight of Enforcement Grants

ecent reports from the Government Accountability Office urged the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to improve its enforcement grant and outreach programs.

GAO said FMCSA agreed to consider GAO’s recommendations for improving enforcement programs, but disagreed with the findings of a second report that criticized the lack of an apparent connection between FMCSA’s education programs and strategic objectives.

In a Dec. 15 report, GAO said FMCSA “follows key effective management practices,” but fails to properly gauge how some of its enforcement programs improve large-truck safety.
