FMCSA Still Wants Printed Duty Records From Drivers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has issued a clarification about printed copies of on duty status records kept by drivers.

The clarification is aimed at those drivers who use laptop computers, tablets, and smartphones to help them prepare the documents.

Federal law currently allows truckers to use such electronic devices but they are not the same as electronic on board recorders which are connected to the truck engine and which law enforcement officers can easily read.

While the alternative devices are acceptable, along with electronic signatures, FMCSA said, drivers must be able to print out copies of their duty records upon request.

FMCSA issued the guidance via a June 10 notice in the Federal Register.
