The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ordered Texas-based Redco Transport Inc. to stop operations, declaring the company an “imminent hazard to public safety,” it said Sept. 24.
On Aug. 12, a truck operated by Redco crashed into a van parked on the shoulder of Interstate 20 in Louisiana, killing a 10-year old boy, his father and the driver of the Redco truck, the Louisiana State Police said.
An FMCSA investigation found the company allegedly did not meet federal hours-of-service standards, the agency said in a statement. The investigation also found the company failed to ensure its drivers were properly qualified and failed to adhere to controlled substance and alcohol testing, FMCSA said.
Redco declined to comment on FMCSA’s allegations.
State troopers said in a statement it is possible the Redco driver fell asleep before the crash.
“It is unacceptable for commercial truck and bus companies to disregard critical safety regulations that serve to protect the motoring public,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in FMCSA’s statement. “Companies that choose to needlessly endanger innocent lives will be blocked from operating on our highways and roads.”
