FMCSA Seeks Input on Vision Waivers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced March 28 it is seeking public input on the applications of 22 drivers with visual impairments who are requesting that they be allowed to drive commercial trucks.

The drivers are unable to meet the physical requirements to operate the commercial vehicles due to conditions that make them impaired in one eye. The conditions range from optic nerve damage to amblyopia. As part of the applications, the drivers submitted the results of their medical evaluations.

FMCSA is collecting feedback from the public on the drivers’ applications through April 27. Information about how to share comments is found in the Federal Register.

Last year, the agency approved the exemption of dozens of drivers who are blind or partially blind in one eye.
