EPA Promises to Be Neutral on Emissions Technology

he Environmental Protection Agency, addressing what it called a "misunderstanding" in the trucking industry, said it did not necessarily oppose selective catalytic reduction as a diesel emissions treatment to meet stringent 2007 standards.

A chorus of engine makers, truck makers and fleet executives had said that EPA appeared biased against SCR technology, which uses a chemical additive to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust stream.

Karl Simon, deputy director of EPA’s assessments and standards division, said the rule on the next level of NOx and particulate matter “is technology neutral. The standard does not say thou shalt use X, Y or Z to get there.”
