EPA Extends High-Sulfur Diesel Fuel Waiver

he Environmental Protection Agency Tuesday extended a temporary emergency waiver to allow the continued sale of some high-sulfur diesel fuel to truckers in the wake of fuel shortages caused by Hurricane Katrina.

At the same time, engine manufacturers warned that running trucks with the off-highway fuel for long distances or for prolonged periods of time could lead to engine damage.

The 20-day EPA extension was issued only for the Eastern and Southeastern regions of the United States. The original Aug. 31 exemption was nationwide and was set to expire on last Thursday.
