Congress already has ordered manufacturers of personal automobiles and small trucks to begin installing pressure-warning lights, in hope of curbing serious accidents caused by tire failures. The mandate is likely to be widened to include over-the-road freight vehicles, perhaps within three years, the industry officials said.

Manufacturers of wheel-related components for both cars and commercial trucks, meanwhile, are to begin compiling information about product problems and turn the reports over to authorities.
