E&MU: Fuel Cells for APUs Produce Mixed Results

.S. truck maker Freightliner LLC, after working on two development projects for more than four years, decided that hydrogen fuel cell technology is not yet ready for a role in reducing idling in the trucking industry.

AB Volvo, parent of Volvo Trucks North America, meanwhile continues to pursue an auxiliary power unit driven by a compact fuel cell. The Swedish automotive firm said this APU is based on recently patented technology that creates hydrogen gas from the truck’s diesel fuel.

Hydrogen fuel cells produce no emissions.
