The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 2.3% in June from the same month in 2014, DOT said Aug 12.

The freight TSI fell 0.3% in June from May to a reading of 121.9, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report.

“The 0.3% decline in the index from May to June was due to declines in truck, water and rail intermodal shipments. For the April-to-June quarter, the 0.6% decline was the first quarterly decline since the second quarter of 2014 and the largest decline since the third quarter of 2012,” DOT said in a statement.

July’s reading was 1.2% below the all-time high of 123.4 set in November 2014. DOT uses a baseline reading of 100 from the year 2000.

The May index was revised down to 122.2 from 122.7.

The freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
