The U.S. Department of Transportation is making $500 million in grants available for states and municipalities that need help to pay for infrastructure projects.

Applications for a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, grant will be accepted through June 5, the agency said. Since it was launched in 2009, the grants have supported large-scale transit projects and multimodal freight corridors.

“Like its preceding rounds, this seventh round of TIGER will fund projects that create jobs, foster regional partnerships, advance new technologies, spur economic and community development, and strengthen the transportation infrastructure of this great country,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said.

Under the Obama administration's recently released Grow America legislative proposal, the grant program would receive $7.5 billion over six years.
