Diesel’s national average price continued its climb toward $3 a gallon, rising 2.2 cents to $2.946, a 16-month high, the Department of Energy reported.

The fifth straight increase in trucking’s main fuel left it 85.6 cents over the same week last year and at its highest level since Nov. 3, 2008, when it was over $3 a gallon at $3.088.

Diesel has jumped 19.8 cents in the past five weeks after falling 12.3 cents in the previous five, DOE said Monday following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Gasoline also increased for a fifth week, rising 3.1 cents to $2.819 a gallon, its highest price in 17 months since it was $2.914 on Oct. 20, 2008.

Gas has risen 21.1 cents in the past five weeks, following a 14.3-cent decline in the previous five weeks.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
