Diesel Price Down 0.6 Cent to $1.299

The average price of diesel fuel made its largest move in three weeks, slipping 0.6 cent per gallon, but continued to hover around the $1.30 mark, a report by the Department of Energy said Monday.

The decline of 0.6 cent pushed the price of diesel to $1.299 a gallon. It followed an increase of 0.3 cent and a decline of 0.2 cent per gallon.

Diesel fuel, along with gasoline, is a major expense for trucking and fluctuations in their prices can affect the cost of providing trucking services.

The price of gasoline also fell nationwide, slipping 0.7 cent per gallon to $1.388.

Last week’s price dipped in each of DOE's Energy Information Administration's geographic regions.

The largest change was in the EIA's West Coast region, which saw the average price fall 1.2 cents per gallon to $1.375. It was led by a decline of 1.7 cents in California – the region’s largest state.

Despite the fall, the West Coast still laid claim to the priciest diesel in the country. On the other hand, the cheapest is along the Gulf Coast, where diesel averaged $1.266, down 0.9 cent from last week.

The EIA surveys 350 fueling stations in five districts at the start of each week, and usually reports the results on the same day that it polls the stations.
