Diesel fuel’s national average retail price fell for the fifth straight week Monday, plunging 14.2 cents to $4.207 a gallon, the Department of Energy said Monday.

The price has fallen 55.7 cents from the record $4.764 set on July 14, and the latest decline left trucking’s main fuel $1.339 over the same week last year, according to DOE figures.

Gasoline, meanwhile, continued its downward track, falling 6.9 cents to $3.74 a gallon, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Gas is now 95.5 cents higher than the same week last year, but has fallen 37.4 cents from the record $4.114 a gallon set July 7.

The diesel decline was led by 15.5-cent plunge on the West Coast to $4.356, and an 18.5-cent downturn in California, which DOE breaks out separately from its five main regions, to $4.422 a gallon.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
