Diesel fuel continued its downward track Monday, falling 5.6 cents to $2.13 a gallon, while gasoline dropped for the first time in a month, the Department of Energy said Monday.

The diesel decline left it $1.422 below the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

The downturn was the biggest since Dec. 22, when trucking’s main fuel also saw a 5.6-cent decline.

Gasoline, meanwhile, fell 5.5 cents to $1.909 a gallon, bucking its recent trend upward.

Gas had last risen four weeks ago, and Monday’s drop was just the second in the past eight weeks. The decline left it $1.221 below the same week last year.

Bloomberg reported Monday that diesel prices are likely to continue to fall this spring following the winter heating season, as world demand remains slumped for the major freight transportation fuel.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
