Diesel’s national average price fell for a third straight week, declining 0.3 cent to $2.787 a gallon, the Department of Energy said Monday.

Trucking’s main fuel had risen 22.6 cents in the previous four weeks before dips of 1.1 cents last week and 0.7 cent two weeks ago.

Monday’s downturn it 12.3 cents below the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Gasoline, meanwhile, rose for the first time in three weeks, gaining a penny to $2.639 a gallon.

Both diesel and gasoline had risen by 22.6 cents in four weeks of increases prior to the recent downturns, according to DOE.

Crude oil rose 9 cents Monday on the New York Mercantile Exchange to close at $77.56 a barrel, after earlier rising to close to $80, Bloomberg reported.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
