The national average price of diesel fuel continued to shatter records Monday, jumping 8.4 cents to $4.143 a gallon, the Department of Energy said.

The gain follows last week’s 10.4-cent spike and leaves trucking’s main fuel $1.292 higher than the same week last year, DOE said.

Gasoline, meanwhile, jumped to a new record of its own, climbing 11.9 cents to $3.508 a gallon, leaving that motor fuel 63.9 cents higher than the same week last year, DOE said.

Crude oil also reached a new record Monday, closing at an all-time high $117.48 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Bloomberg reported.

Futures rose from Friday’s record of $116.69, and topped out in intraday trading Monday at $117.76 a barrel, Bloomberg said.

To help trucking companies deal with soaring costs, American Trucking Associations said Monday it will host a fuel strategies workshop on June 19 in Arlington, Va. ATA said
it will release online registration information soon.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
