Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico plunged 13.1% in December from a year earlier, to $52.9 billion, the Department of Transportation said Tuesday.

For the full year, surface trade the North American Free Trade Agreement partners rose 4.1% from 2007, to $829.9 billion, DOT said.

December truck imports to the United States fell 13.6% year-over-year to $18 billion, while truck exports fell 6.1% to $18.6 billion.

Rail imports fell 26.3% to $5.3 billion, while exports fell 21.5% to $3 billion, DOT said. Pipeline imports fell 14.3% to $4.4 billion, while exports plunged 44% to $261 million.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90% of U.S. trade among NAFTA partners moves by land.
