Continued Ban on Surge Brakes Urged

merican Trucking Associations and truck manufacturers opposed a federal government proposal to lift a ban on “surge brakes” for commercial vehicles. They raised questions about the surge brakes’ parking-brake capabilities.

Surge brakes are activated automatically by the forward momentum that occurs when the towing vehicle hits its brakes.

Several members “have expressed their concern over the lack of parking-brake capability with surge brakes and the potential to overload the parking brake system on the towing vehicle and create a rollaway situation,” ATA said in comments filed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
