Connecticut Close to Enacting Snow-Removal Law for Drivers

A proposal that would allow police to fine drivers of cars and trucks $75 for failing to remove snow and ice from their vehicles has overwhelmingly passed the Connecticut House.

Adopted in a late night session Saturday, the measure passed on a 135 to 1 vote, and was sent to the Senate. To become law, the Senate must pass the bill before it adjourns this week.

The bill is modeled after similar legislation passed last year in New Jersey where supporters said the law would keep snow and ice from flying off and damaging property or injuring other motorists.

The measure, which would take effect in December 2013, calls for enhanced penalties of up to $1,000 for non-commercial drivers and up to $1,250 for commercial drivers if ice or snow chunks fly off their vehicles and cause injury or damage.
