Werner Enterprises Inc. said Clarence L. Werner, the company’s founder and first driver, has stepped down from his CEO position, which is being taken by Derek Leathers, the company’s president.

The announcement said the 78-year old Werner will remain as executive chairman of the board. The move was one of several changes as of a planned management transition that were made by the company that ranks No. 16 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

Leathers, who is 46, has been a Werner executive for 17 years and also was chief operating officer.

H. Marty Nordlund, who has 32 years of trucking industry experience, was named senior executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Werner also named Jim Schaible as executive vice president and chief administrative officer and announced that Gerald Timmerman has been again named to the board. Timmerman, who served on Werner’s board, is filling an open position, the company statement said.
