Celadon Group Gets Tax Breaks to Relocate in Indiana

Celadon Group will receive nearly $3 million in state tax breaks to move its headquarters to a larger site just east of Indianapolis under an arrangement that the trucking company will hire 375 employees over the next seven years, according to a recent filing with the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

Celadon, which ranks No. 32 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada, will spend $28 million in a three-phase project to build a new complex in Greenfield, Indiana, to house its trucking operations, human resources, information technology and managers. The first phase is scheduled to be completed this summer, although senior staff are not expected to move until the last phase.

The new building, located in the Mount Comfort neighborhood, will be about five to six miles from its current home in the eastern part of Indianapolis.

Celadon promised to hire 375 employees by Dec. 31, 2024, adding to the current total of 1,121. The tax credit takes effect in the year 2020.

A company spokesman told TT that the trucking company has grown exponentially in the last several years, necessitating the move of subsidiary Celadon Logistics to separate offices and the decision to build out on a larger site outside of the city. In November, Celadon Logistics opened a sales office near Columbus, Ohio. It also expanded or opened facilities in Laredo, Texas, Dallas and St. Louis in 2016.

Celadon also stated it will consolidate its Indianapolis operations to “accommodate continued growth and meet customer demand,” although a company spokesman said the trucking company could end up using both spaces if it continues to grow.
