Canadian Carriers’ Revenue, Expenses Rise in 4Q

The top 91 Canada-based for-hire motor carriers that earn at least C$25 million annually generated operating revenue of C$2.4 billion and expenses of C$2.3 billion in the fourth quarter, with both figures rising less than 1% from the previous quarter, Statistics Canada reported.Average per-carrier revenue rose 2.3% from the previous fourth quarter to C$26.5 million, while average expenses gained 2.9% to C$24.9 million.The top for-hire carriers’ operating ratio was 0.94 in the fourth quarter, compared with 0.93 in the previous fourth quarter. A ratio greater than 1.0 represents an operating loss.The fourth quarter of 2006 data on the top for-hire carriers, taken from the Quarterly Motor Carriers of Freight Survey, provide results from 64 general freight carriers, down from 66 carriers in 2005, and 27 specialized freight carriers, up from 25 carriers in 2005.
