California May Halt Use of Digital Billboards

A California legislator has introduced a bill to put a moratorium on digital advertising displays on highways until studies determine whether the billboards are safe.

The measure, introduced Jan. 13 by Los Angeles Assemblyman Mike Feuer (D), was hailed as a first step to safety by Scenic America, a group seeking a permanent ban on the digital billboards.

Kevin Fry, president of Scenic America, said that “because of their extraordinary brightness and frequently changing messages, digital billboards pose serious potential hazards.”

Before they proliferate, Fry said, it would be “prudent” to take time to study the safety of the billboards.
