Brake Inspection Blitz Set for Sept. 8-14

State and federal law enforcement officers will focus on inspecting truck and bus brake systems Sept. 8 to 14 during Brake Safety Week, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance said.

CVSA, which organizes Brake Safety Week, expects 30,000 trucks’ brakes to be inspected during the annual safety blitz, it said in a Sept. 5 statement. The group aims to bring attention to brake safety during the event.

“The essential message of Brake Safety Week is clear: properly functioning brake systems are crucial to safe vehicle operation and improperly installed or poorly maintained brakes must be kept off the road,” CVSA Executive Director Stephen Keppler said in the statement.

Last year one out of seven of 21,255 vehicles inspected were placed out-of-service due to brake issues during the enforcement mobilization. The rate was slightly higher than 2011 and an increase for the second year in a row.
