BorgWarner, GE Locomotive Announce Layoffs

BorgWarner Turbo Systems said it is laying off 140 workers at its plant in Arden, N.C., that manufactures turbochargers for diesel trucks and construction equipment.

The plant employs 650 and has an annual payroll of $35 million.

Also last week, locomotive manufacturer GE Transportation said it is laying off 1,550 workers, including 350 whose jobs will be cut permanently.

The company said 1,200 layoffs are lack-of-work furloughs that should end eventually. Most cuts will occur at its primary plant in Erie, Pa.
