Best Transportation announced it used a Class 8 battery-electric vehicle to deliver a container from Port Newark to a Costco wholesale location within New Jersey without incident, calling it a first at the port and part of the carrier’s ongoing evaluation of electric trucks.

Besides BYD Co.’s tractor, the company plans on introducing four electric yard hostlers for use inside the New Jersey port. Best is purchasing and testing electric vehicles to stay ahead of the learning curve and be ready when the next generation becomes available, according to the Port Newark, N.J.-based company.

“This is just the first step in our zero-emission vehicle program. We are making every effort to reduce the carbon footprint of our company and our customers’ supply chain,” Best President Tom Heimgartner said in a company release.
