Aeva and Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems have agreed to develop an active safety system for Class 8 trucks that will integrate Aeva’s 4D lidar sensors and perception software with Bendix collision mitigation technology, the companies announced June 16.

The program is aimed at future mass-production vehicles and would bring Aeva’s perception platform into Bendix’s next generation of active safety and collision mitigation systems, according to a release.

The collaboration targets a commercial vehicle market in which about 300,000 new Class 8 trucks are sold annually in North America. Bendix Fusion, the company’s flagship advanced driver assistance system, is available across most major Class 8 original equipment manufacturer platforms and could offer a route for broader deployment of lidar-based sensing in production trucks.

The companies framed the agreement as part of a wider shift in the use of lidar technology, extending beyond higher levels of autonomy and into driver assistance systems intended to improve active safety performance.



“We’re excited to expand our work with Aeva through this program as we continue advancing safety technologies for commercial vehicle fleets,” said Mike Tober, chief technology officer at Bendix.

Aeva said the effort marks a step toward mass production of a lidar-based Level 2 and higher driver assistance system for commercial vehicles.

Mina Rezk, co-founder and chief technology officer at Aeva, said pairing Aeva’s 4D lidar with Bendix’s safety platform could help deliver lidar-based systems for commercial fleets at scale.
