The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing gauge rose 1.3 points to 54, according to data released June 1. Readings above 50 indicate growth.

Some gauges are at their highest since the 2020-23 period, when economies locked down because of COVID, shortages emerged and shipping snarls persisted. 

The Institute for Supply Management’s gauge of prices paid for manufacturing inputs climbed for a fourth straight month to a four-year high of 84.6.

The Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing index eased half a point to 48.2, according to data released Dec. 1. The measure has been below 50 for nine straight months.

While a slight improvement from 48 in July, details of the ISM report were mixed and the gauge remained below the level of 50 that separates expansion and contraction.

U.S. factory activity contracted in May for a third consecutive month and a gauge of imports fell to a 16-year low as firms pulled back in the face of higher tariffs.

A measure of U.S. factory activity remained stuck in contraction territory for a 14th straight month at the end of 2023, restrained by weaker orders.
