Key senators and the families of the 67 victims killed in a 2025 midair collision over Washington think the bill needs to be strengthened.

“These systems function primarily as convenience features rather than safety enhancements,” NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.

A revised version of the House’s aviation safety bill now has the backing of the National Transportation Safety Board.

The Senate Commerce Committee has advanced a slate of transportation nominees, including a National Transportation Safety Board member seeking another term.

President Donald Trump's administration said March 9 that it believes the firing is justified. Todd Inman said, “I look forward to defending my reputation through all legal means possible.”

Todd Inman was a public face of the investigation into last year's deadly collision of an airliner and an Army helicopter near the nation's capital. The NTSB has a five-person board but its website shows just three members.

Chair Jennifer Homendy said the House bill’s “watered-down” requirements wouldn’t do enough to prevent a future tragedy, and wouldn’t be as effective as a Senate bill that came up short of passing in the House.

The Republican-led Senate will be next to consider the nominees who, if confirmed, would join Secretary Sean Duffy’s leadership team at the Department of Transportation.

The Commerce Committee recently approved nominees for leadership roles in the secretary’s office and key safety agencies, setting up confirmation votes as early as this month.
