The Freightliner Cascadia sleeper tractor is outfitted with Hexagon Agility’s back-of-cab and side-mount CNG fuel systems with a combined capacity equivalent to 265 gallons of diesel.

Cummins, which has offered the X15N in North America for the past two years, showcased the natural gas-powered version of its largest truck engine at IAA Transportation.

Replacement demand funded by the freight market rebound will continue to drive North American heavy-duty truck demand, engine maker Cummins’ top executive said.

Cummins plans to stagger the introduction of two model-year 2027 engines that meet tighter emissions standards after reviewing draft EPA regulations.

However, the start of production at the site remains up in the air, said Daimler Truck North America CEO John O’Leary.

EPA has proposed ending diesel exhaust fluid-related engine derates, replacing the gradual dialing back of truck performance with visual or audible notifications.

Cummins and Paccar are rolling out software updates tied to revised EPA guidance on DEF inducement. The changes aim to improve uptime and maintain missions compliance.

“The X10 definitely opens up another market,” Brett Merritt, president of Cummins’ engine business, told analysts and investors during the firm’s investor day.

The settlement is the latest in a series between truck and engine manufacturers and the California agency related to nitrogen oxide emissions.

“We made sure that going into 2027, our service intervals are improving,” International Motors Director of Engineering Navtej Singh said at ACT Expo.
