XTRA Lease said it plans to buy about 9,400 new dry van and refrigerated trailers this year and refurbish another 1,000 flatbed trailers to extend their service life.

The St. Louis-based company said the new equipment will have side skirts, and that older trailers that will be taken out of over-the-road service will be used for local cartage, storage or will be sold.

The latest round of investment continues a multi-year program to provide late-model trailers to carriers and shippers alike. The company did not say how much the new equipment would cost or what companies would manufacture the trailers.

Over the past 30 months, XTRA Lease has ordered almost 25,000 trailers, the company said in a statement.

“In an economic era in which few companies have the capital resources to keep fleets updated with high-performance, late-model equipment, XTRA Lease will continue to offer new trailers through rental and leasing opportunities,” said CEO Bill Franz.

“Shippers haven’t reduced expectations for on-time deliveries. But completing them with an aging, over-the-road fleet is risky,” he said in the statement.
