ruckers cited higher costs in opposing a proposal to toll Interstate 90 in Washington State, while others said it might be the only way to pay for road improvements, the Yakima (Wash.) Herald reported Wednesday.

The state’s legislature will face such opposing viewpoints next year as they consider a consultant’s report that generally favors toll roads to fund significant transportation projects in the state, the paper said.

The state’s Transportation Commission will leave it to lawmakers to take a position on the matter, but the commission would set any tolls, which members said had not been discussed yet, the Herald reported.

Washington’s history with tolling stretches back 50 years and most projects have been paid off more quickly than expected, the paper said.
