Walmart Inc. announced a 1.1 million-square-foot next-generation fulfillment center in Joliet, Ill.

The Joliet fulfillment center will be the first of four announced earlier this year that will feature a new patent-pending process powered by the combination of people, robotics and machine learning, according to the Bentonville, Ark.-based company.

This process will streamline a manual 12-step process to just five steps. Once completed, the four new state-of-the-art fulfillment centers for Walmart could provide 75% of the U.S. population with next- or two-day shipping.

Walmart Inc. ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest private carriers in North America.

“Customers continue to expect faster delivery times and we are excited to be able to meet those needs with these new high-tech facilities,” Karisa Sprague, senior vice president of fulfillment network operations for Walmart U.S., said in a release.

Walmart reported it will spend more than $62 billion with Illinois suppliers in fiscal year-end 2022 and supports more than 567,000 Illinois supplier jobs. — Transport Topics
