Volvo Trucks North America announced that it now offers a battery-powered parking cooler as a factory-installed option on its VNM 630, VNL 630, VNL 670, VNL 730 and VNL 780 sleeper models.

The parking cooler is intended to keep the cab and sleeper comfortable without idling the engine while parked, VTNA said.

Jason Spence, marketing manager for Volvo Trucks, said in a statement, “With regulations varying from state to state, and even city to city, the parking cooler eliminates the guessing game when it comes to anti-idling rules while maximizing driver comfort, lowering fuel costs and reducing emissions.”

Power comes from the combined energy of the truck starting batteries paired with four AGM [absorbed glass mat] cycle batteries located in the in-frame battery box. The parking cooler is rated to keep the sleeper at 74 degrees Fahrenheit for up to 10 hours, even during the day, VTNA said. Smart energy management software is also included and protects the engine’s starting batteries from being run down, it said.

A Volvo VNL 670 model equipped with the new battery-powered parking cooler will be on display in Volvo booth No. 1410 at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s 2016 Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition, which is Feb. 26 to March 4 at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
