Vitran’s 1Q Loss Widens

Vitran Corp. late Tuesday reported a larger first-quarter loss than a year ago despite a 12.1% gain in revenue.

The Toronto-based carrier lost $5.8 million, or 36 cents per share, compared with a loss of $224,000, or 1 cent, a year ago. Revenue rose to $208 million, from $185 million a year ago.

Its less-than-truckload unit reported an operating loss of $4.8 million, compared with operating income of $900,000 last year. Revenue rose to $179 million, from $159 million. Shipments and tonnage improved 11.2% and 8.3%, respectively.

Its supply chain segment’s operating income was flat at $2.1 million, while revenue increased 10.5% to $29.2 million.

Vitran is ranked No. 34 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
