Used Truck Glut Vexes Class 8 Manufacturers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As major truck manufacturers hawked their newest offerings at the Mid-America Trucking Show, they were haunted by the ironic specter of their own success.

“We sold too many trucks last year,” Freightliner Chief Executive Officer James L. Hebe told reporters March 23. And Freightliner is as much to blame as any other manufacturer, he said.

The president of Volvo Trucks North America, Marc Gustafson, made essentially the same point from a different angle.

“The industry didn’t manage its sales very well,” Gustafson said.
