U.S. Fears Engine Makers Won't Meet New Rules

Federal officials are starting to worry about the ability of diesel engine manufacturers to live up to the stipulations in a 1998 consent decree that sets stricter pollution standards for model year 2003 engines.

“We have concerns on whether the engine manufacturers are on track and will be able to meet the requirements for 2002,” Karen Dworkin, assistant chief of the Environmental Enforcement Division of the Department of Justice, said after a March 21 public meeting where the issue was explored.

She said the government is in the process of scheduling private meetings with engine makers.

Environmental Protection Agency officials said the issues must be resolved soon for engine production to go ahead.
