U.S. Border Crossings Rose 3.6% Last Year

The number of commercial trucks that crossed into the United States from Mexico and Canada rose 3.6% last year from 2011, the Department of Transportation said Friday.

The rise follows a 1.7% increase from 2010 to 2011, which followed four years of declines, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said.

Of the 10.7 million truck crossings into the United States, 5.6 million were from Canada, up from 5.5 million in 2011.

The U.S.-Mexican border had 5.1 million truck-crossing entries, up from 4.9 million in 2011.

BTS reported only on the numbers of vehicles, not on freight tonnage or the monetary value of the freight.
