UPS Puts Boxes Back on the Rails, But Others Say Service Still Lags

United Parcel Service has restored most of its intermodal business to the Norfolk Southern and CSX railroads, but some other major shippers say things are getting worse again.

The difficulties of the two railroads have even revived some interest in a rail re-regulation bill that had been considered dead in the water.

“Our traffic diversion has dropped to a low level,” said UPS spokesman Norman Black.

But Mike Heimowitz, a member of the distribution team at the Chemical Manufacturers Association, said transit times are as much as twice what they were before the two railroads split up and took over the Conrail territory on June 1.
