UPS Inc. said it has acquired Polar Speed, a U.K.-based health-care logistics company. Terms were not disclosed.

Polar Speed specializes in temperature-controlled deliveries to hospitals, pharmacies, wholesalers, surgery centers and patents, according to UPS.

“The acquisition will help UPS meet the needs of health-care customers who want to reach the important U.K. market offering increased value in managing more flexible and efficient health-care supply chains,” Cindy Miller, president of UPS Europe, said in a statement.

Polar Speed has 118 temperature-controlled vehicles fitted with satellite tracking so customers can track deliveries in real time and on-board alarms to alert drivers to possible temperature changes.

UPS added three warehouses to its network of health-care facilities, which total 45 worldwide.

“Our combined services will ensure health-care companies have access to the best temperature-sensitive transportation solutions and allow us to effectively handle the rising demand for temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical and biologic products,” Miller said.

UPS Inc. ranks No. 1 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
