Universal Truckload's Quarterly Earnings Increase

niversal Truckload Services reported late Wednesday it earned $5.8 million or 36 cents a share in the third quarter, compared with $4.6 million or 29 cents for 2005.

Operating revenue for the quarter rose 26.7% to $171.9 million, compared with $135.6 million in 2005, Universal said in a statement.

The carrier’s operating revenue included fuel surcharges of $17.8 million and $9.4 mil-lion for the third quarters of 2006 and 2005, respectively.



Universal said its truckload revenue increased by 18.2% to $99.5 million, while broker-age revenue gained 21.6% to $46.8 million. Intermodal revenue rose 96.9% to $25.6 million.

Universal is ranked No. 44 on the Transport Topics 100 list of the largest U.S. and Ca-nadian for-hire carriers.
