Auto hauler United Road Services said it has acquired the car-hauling division of Waggoners Trucking, a move United Road said would nearly double its capacity.

United Road will now be the second-largest auto carrier in North America, it said in a Dec. 14 statement. It will have 75 locations in the United States and Canada, and it company expects to carry 2.5 million vehicles in 2014.

“Acquiring an organization of Waggoners’ stature is both a privilege and a strategic game-changer for United Road,” Kathleen McCann, president of United Road, said in the statement. McCann said the two companies are geographically complementary, and the acquisition will strengthen United Road’s presence in the southeastern and south central United States.

Waggoners is headquartered both in Billings, Mont., and Irving, Texas. It also offers flatbed and specialized trucking services.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

United Road is ranked No. 78 on the Transport Topics Top 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers. Waggoners is ranked No. 94.
