United Rentals Agrees to Acquire BlueLine Rental

United Rentals Inc. has agreed to purchase BlueLine Rental, a construction equipment rental business based in The Woodlands, Texas, from Platinum Equity for $2.1 billion in cash.

The deal continues a consolidation trend in the equipment rental industry.

BlueLine supplies aerial platforms, material handling equipment, earthmovers and compactors to customers in the construction, manufacturing and energy industries. The company operates 114 locations in the United States and Canada.



United Rentals ranks No. 15 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of largest private carriers with a fleet of 1,673 tractors, 3,069 straight trucks and 1,291 trailers. BlueLine’s fleet consists of 281 tractors, 793 straight trucks and 283 trailers, according to registration data on file with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

In July, United Rentals completed the acquisition of BakerCorp International Holdings, a multinational provider of tank, pump, filtration and trench shoring rental equipment, for $715 million.

BakerCorp, based in Seal Beach, Calif., operated 46 branches in North America and 11 in Europe and had a fleet of 214 tractors, 187 straight trucks and 716 trailers, based on DOT registration data.
