Two Auto Haulers to Merge

The sluggish automobile industry has led Jack Cooper Transport Co., an automobile carrier for General Motors Corp., to merge with another car hauling company, the Kansas City Star reported.

Active Transportation Co., Joplin, Mo., has acquired a majority stake in the Kansas City, Mo., carrier, the Star said.

The carriers' operations will merge into an entity with about 1,000 employees, and the company expects no layoffs from the merger.

The combined company will be called Cooper-Active. Terms of the sale were not disclosed, the Star said.
