A report by Commerce Secretary Luther Hodges 50 years ago put the cost of the completing the interstate highway system at $48.6 billion, an increase of $5.8 billion from earlier estimates, due to changes in highway design and traffic data.

Also in this edition of Transport Topics from Jan. 18, 1965 is a story about a slowdown in trucking at East Coast ports due to a walkout by longshoremen. Drayage firms faced a similar situation at West Coast ports in January this year.
