Today increases in truck tonnage and freight rates should make trucking executives happy, but the long-festering driver shortage has mushroomed to such a critical level that fleet managers have made or may soon make radical changes in how they operate.

In this issue of Transport Topics, back in 1995, the trucking industry was facing the same problem, driver shortage.

“Across the nation, thousands of tractors sit idle in company yards or unpurchased on dealers’ lots because the driver seats can’t be filled. When trucking firms have to turn down business, the need to deepen the pool of long-haul drivers turns desperate,” we reported on Jan. 30 1995.
